TikTok relies heavily on videos, making access to your iPhone’s camera essential for creating and uploading content. If you’ve just installed the app or find yourself unable to record videos, it’s likely that the camera permission has not been granted. Fortunately, enabling camera access on TikTok is simple and only takes a few steps within your iPhone’s settings.
Why Camera Access is Important on TikTok
Without access to your iPhone’s camera, TikTok cannot allow you to record videos, go live, or use popular in-app features such as filters, effects, and duets. Even if you can browse videos and comment, your ability to create content will be restricted until camera permission is granted. This permission also allows the app to use your front and back cameras depending on your preference while recording.
Steps to Allow TikTok Camera Access
To enable camera access for TikTok, open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down the list of apps until you find TikTok. Tap on the TikTok app, and you’ll see a list of permissions that the app can request from your device. These may include Camera, Microphone, Photos, and more.
Next to the “Camera” option, there should be a toggle switch. If the switch is off (grey), it means TikTok does not have permission to use your camera. Tap the switch to turn it on—it will turn green, indicating that camera access has been granted.
What to Do if the Option Doesn’t Appear
In some cases, TikTok may not appear in your Settings app’s list, especially if the app hasn’t yet requested permission. To trigger the request, open TikTok and try to create a video by tapping the plus (+) icon at the bottom of the screen. TikTok will then prompt you to allow camera access. Tap “OK” when the pop-up appears. This will automatically update your iPhone settings and give the app the necessary permission.
Checking for Other Restrictions
If you still can’t access the camera even after enabling the setting, check if Screen Time restrictions are turned on. Go to Settings, then tap on “Screen Time” followed by “Content & Privacy Restrictions.” Tap on “Allowed Apps” and make sure “Camera” is enabled here as well. If the camera itself is disabled system-wide, no apps will be able to use it.
