How to Do a Voice Over on TikTok

TikTok has become a powerful platform for creative expression, and one popular feature that creators use to enhance their videos is the voice over. A voice over allows you to narrate or comment over a video clip, making your content more engaging, personal, and sometimes even funnier. Whether you want to explain a story, add commentary, or provide instructions, here’s a detailed guide on how to do a voice over on TikTok using the app’s built-in features.

Record or Upload a Video

To start, open the TikTok app and tap the plus sign (+) at the bottom of the screen to create a new video. You can either record a new video by pressing and holding the red record button or upload a video from your gallery by tapping the “Upload” option on the right side. Once your video is ready, tap the check mark to proceed to the editing screen.

Access the Voice Over Feature

On the editing screen, look to the right-hand side and tap on the “Voiceover” option. This will open the voice over tool, where you’ll see your video timeline along with a microphone icon at the bottom. Here, you can choose where to start your voice over within the video. TikTok allows you to record your narration over the original sound or mute the original sound if you prefer.

Before recording, you’ll see a checkbox labeled “Keep original sound”. If you want your voice over to replace all the original audio, uncheck this box. If you want to keep the background music or other sounds from the original video while adding your voice, leave the box checked.

Record Your Voice Over

When you’re ready, press and hold the red record button to begin your voice over. You can record over the entire video or just a portion of it. You can also pause and resume recording as needed, which is useful if you want to narrate different parts of the video separately. As you record, your voice will be layered directly onto the video.

If you make a mistake or want to redo the voice over, simply tap the “Undo” arrow to remove the last recording, then re-record that section. This gives you the flexibility to perfect your narration before moving on.

Finalize and Post

Once you’re satisfied with your voice over, tap “Save” at the top-right corner. This will take you back to the main editing screen, where you can add other effects such as text, filters, or stickers. From here, you can also adjust volume levels to balance your voice with the background audio or music.
