How to Make a Group Chat on TikTok

TikTok is widely known for short videos and viral trends, but it also offers social features that allow users to connect and chat. One such feature is the group chat, which lets you message multiple people at once within the app. Whether you’re planning a content collaboration, coordinating with friends, or just want a place to chat with fellow TikTokers, group chats can be a convenient option. However, it’s important to note that TikTok’s group messaging feature is only available to certain users and under specific conditions.

Requirements for Creating a Group Chat

Before you try to make a group chat on TikTok, there are a few conditions to be aware of. First, you must be mutual followers with the people you want to include in the group. That means you must follow them, and they must follow you back. Additionally, both you and the other participants need to have messaging enabled in your privacy settings. If either party has restricted messages, you won’t be able to add them to a group.

TikTok’s messaging features are only available to users who are 16 years or older, and in some cases, certain countries may have limited access to group messaging depending on local laws or TikTok updates.

Steps to Create a Group Chat

To begin creating a group chat, open the TikTok app and go to your Inbox, located at the bottom of the screen. Once in the Inbox, tap on the airplane or message icon in the top right corner. This will take you to your messages.

From here, tap the new message icon (usually a pencil or “+” symbol), which allows you to start a new conversation. Instead of selecting just one person, you can now select multiple mutual followers by tapping their names. After selecting your desired participants, tap Chat or Next, and a new group chat will be created.

In the chat, you can send text messages, emojis, and TikTok videos. The group will display the usernames of the participants, but you can also assign a group name for easy reference. Simply tap on the group settings or profile icon inside the chat to update the name and view the members.

Managing the Group Chat

Once the group is created, you can manage it like any other chat. You can add or remove members, mute notifications, and leave the group if you no longer want to participate. To make changes, open the group chat and tap on the three dots in the top right corner. This menu will give you access to group settings, where you can rename the group or see who’s in it.

If you’re the person who created the group, you typically have more control over group settings than regular members. However, TikTok does not currently support group admins with advanced permissions like some messaging apps do.
