How to Mute on TikTok

TikTok is a fast-growing platform where people create and share short videos, often paired with music, voiceovers, or trending sounds. While sound is a big part of the app’s appeal, there are times when you may want to mute TikTok—whether it’s silencing videos in your feed, muting sounds while creating content, or stopping notifications from interrupting your day. If you’re wondering how to mute on TikTok, here’s a complete guide.

Muting Videos While Watching TikTok

Sometimes you may want to watch TikTok without sound. Unlike YouTube, TikTok doesn’t provide a dedicated mute button on videos, but you can still silence them:

  1. Use Your Phone’s Volume Buttons – Press the volume down button on your device until the sound is completely muted.
  2. Adjust System Settings – On iOS or Android, you can lower or mute the media volume from the quick settings panel.

This way, you can keep scrolling through TikTok without hearing audio.

Muting Sound While Recording Your Own Video

If you’re creating content but don’t want sound to be recorded in your TikTok, you can easily mute it during editing:

  1. Open the TikTok app and start recording your video.
  2. After recording, tap the Volume option on the editing screen.
  3. Two sliders will appear: Original Sound (from your recording) and Added Sound (music you select).
  4. Drag the Original Sound slider all the way down to 0 to mute background noise from your recording.
  5. You can still add music or effects if you want.

This feature is helpful when you only want to showcase visuals without capturing voices or environmental sounds.

Muting TikTok Notifications

TikTok can be noisy outside the app too, especially with constant notifications. If you want peace and quiet:

  1. Go to your Profile.
  2. Tap the three-line menu (☰) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Toggle off the categories you want to mute (likes, comments, new followers, direct messages, etc.).

This ensures TikTok won’t disturb you with alerts when you’re offline.

Muting Other Users on TikTok

If someone’s content or comments are overwhelming, TikTok allows you to manage interactions without blocking them completely:
