TikTok is a platform that thrives on connections—whether you’re following friends, creators, or strangers with great content. However, there may come a time when you want to clean up your friends list. Perhaps you’re no longer in touch with someone, want more privacy, or simply want to reduce the number of people you follow or are followed by. Thankfully, TikTok offers several ways to remove friends, depending on the level of interaction. In this article, we explain exactly how to remove friends on TikTok using simple, updated steps.
What Does “Friend” Mean on TikTok?
On TikTok, a “friend” is someone you follow who also follows you back. This mutual connection is different from a regular follower or someone you follow but who doesn’t follow you back.
Once you’re friends with someone:
- You can message each other directly.
- You may see each other’s posts more often.
- Your activity is more visible to them.
If you’d like to remove a friend, you have two main options:
- Unfollow them (they’ll still follow you).
- Remove them as a follower (they’ll stop seeing your private content).
You can also block them if you want to completely cut ties.
Method 1: Unfollow a Friend on TikTok
Unfollowing removes the mutual friend status. Here’s how:
- Open the TikTok app.
- Tap the Profile icon at the bottom right.
- Tap Following to view your list.
- Scroll or search for the person you want to remove.
- Tap the Following button next to their name—it will change to Follow, confirming they have been unfollowed.
Note: They will still be able to follow and message you unless you remove them as a follower or block them.
Method 2: Remove a Friend as a Follower
To stop someone from following you:
- Go to your Profile.
- Tap Followers to open the list.
- Locate the person you want to remove.
- Tap the three dots (…) or manage icon next to their name (varies by device).
- Tap Remove this follower.
- Confirm your action.
Once removed, they will no longer be able to see your content if your account is private.
Method 3: Block the Friend Completely
Blocking is the most secure way to remove a friend from your TikTok life entirely:
- Go to the friend’s profile.
- Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm when prompted.
This will:
- Remove them as a follower and followee.
- Prevent them from seeing or interacting with your content.
- Disable messaging between you.
Additional Tip: Make Your TikTok Private
To avoid future friend or follower issues, consider switching to a private account:
- Tap Profile > Menu (three lines) > Settings and Privacy.
- Tap Privacy.
- Toggle on Private account.
This ensures only people you approve can follow you or see your posts.
