How to Remove Sound from a TikTok Video After Posting

Many TikTok users have faced the challenge of posting a video, only to later realize they want to remove the background sound or audio. Whether it’s because of copyrighted music, privacy concerns, or simply a change of mind, figuring out how to remove sound from a TikTok video after it’s already live can be confusing. While TikTok does not currently allow users to directly edit the sound of a video after it has been posted, there are some practical workarounds.

Can You Remove Sound from a Posted TikTok Video?

Unfortunately, TikTok does not have a built-in feature that lets users remove or edit the sound of a video after it has already been published. Once a video is live on your profile, its audio — whether it’s original sound, voice, or music from TikTok’s library — becomes part of the published content and cannot be changed. However, users still have a few effective options to solve this problem.

Workaround 1: Delete and Re-upload the Video

The most reliable method is to delete the original video and re-upload a new version without the sound. Before deleting, make sure to download the original video from your TikTok page — but note that TikTok adds a watermark, and depending on your settings, it might include the original sound. To avoid retaining unwanted audio, it’s better to use the version saved on your phone (if available) or recreate the video from scratch.

Once you’ve prepared the new version, head to the upload page, mute the original sound, or skip adding any background music. Before posting, preview the video to ensure it meets your expectations.

Workaround 2: Mute the Sound Using Third-Party Apps

If you don’t want to lose your views and interactions by deleting the video, another option is to download the video, mute the audio using a third-party editing app, and then re-upload it as a new post. Apps like CapCut, InShot, or Adobe Premiere Rush allow you to import the video, remove or mute the sound, and export a clean version. This re-uploaded version won’t retain the likes and comments of the original, but you’ll have full control over the audio.

What If the Sound is Copyrighted?

If TikTok detects that the video uses copyrighted music or a sound that violates its community guidelines, it may automatically mute the sound or remove it. In such cases, you’ll be notified, and the platform might restrict the video’s visibility. To avoid this, always use TikTok’s licensed music library or ensure you have permission to use any third-party audio.
