How to Untag Yourself on TikTok

Tagging is a popular feature on TikTok that allows users to mention friends or collaborators in videos. While being tagged in a video can increase visibility or engagement, sometimes you might find yourself tagged in content you’d rather not be associated with. Whether it’s a prank, spam, or simply irrelevant, knowing how to untag yourself is important for managing your digital presence. Here is how to untag yourself on TikTok.

TikTok Tagging

When someone tags you in a TikTok video, your username appears in the video’s caption or in the comments. TikTok doesn’t currently allow users to directly “untag” themselves the way platforms like Facebook or Instagram do. However, you can control who tags you, report the video, or ask the creator to remove the tag manually.

What You Can Do to Untag Yourself

If you’ve been tagged in a video and want to remove the association, start by checking the video itself. If it’s in the caption or comments, there’s no direct option to untag yourself. However, you can take the following steps:

First, contact the video creator. This is the easiest and fastest solution. Send them a direct message and politely request that they remove your username from the post. Most users will respond positively, especially if your request is respectful.

Second, if the video violates TikTok’s community guidelines or includes harmful or misleading content, you can report the video. Tap the share icon on the video, then select “Report.” Follow the prompts to specify the reason, such as harassment, impersonation, or inappropriate content. If TikTok finds the video in violation, it may be taken down.

Third, you can manage your tag settings to prevent future unwanted tags. Open your TikTok app and go to your profile. Tap the three-line menu in the top right corner and select “Settings and Privacy.” Under “Privacy,” look for the option labeled “Mentions” or “Tagged Videos.” Here, you can choose who is allowed to tag you — everyone, friends, or no one at all. Selecting “No one” means no user will be able to mention or tag you in the future.

Removing Tags from Comments or Captions

If your username is tagged in the comment section of a TikTok video, you can delete the comment if it’s on your own post. However, if it’s on someone else’s video, you can only report it. To do this, long-press the comment and select “Report.” For captions, again, only the original poster can remove or edit the mention.

If the mention is affecting your reputation or spreading false information, and the creator refuses to remove it, you may also block the user to prevent further interaction. Blocking someone will also remove all their past mentions from your notifications and limit future contact.

Protecting Your TikTok Identity

Although TikTok doesn’t yet offer a direct “untag” feature like other platforms, the combination of privacy settings, communication, and reporting tools can help you regain control. As TikTok evolves, it may introduce more advanced tagging controls, but for now, being proactive with your privacy settings is your best defense.
