The IEBC selection panel has revealed that it received a total of 1,848 applications for the positions of Chairperson and Commissioners.
Nelson Makanda, the head of the selection panel, said that the process of verifying these applications is ongoing and all the candidates’ names will be published soon.
“The Panel assured the public that we shall observe natural justice and equality in the recruitment process.”
“We will post updates at each stage of the process,” the part of the statement read.
These positions at the electoral commission arose following Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and Commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu leaving on January 16, 2023, effective six years into their tenure.
However, ex-IEBC Deputy Chairperson Juliana Cherera, and Commissioners Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi were removed from their positions after the commissioners joined forces with the former presidential candidate Raila Odinga to challenge the 2022 Presidential Election results.
Known as the ‘Cherera Four’, these former commissioners were strongly skeptical of the validity of the election results, expressing concerns that the numbers being declared by Chebukati had not been thoroughly counted.
The former commissioners were accused of conspiring with leading figures of the Azimio la Umoja coalition to undermine Raila Odinga’s campaign.
At the time of writing, Hussein Marjan is the only active person at the IEBC, who serves as the commission’s acting CEO.
