American comedian and actor Reggie McFadden, best known for his appearances on In Living Color and Def Comedy Jam, has died at the age of 57 in Tanzania.
McFadden’s death was confirmed by his sister, best-selling author Bernice McFadden, who told The Hollywood Reporter that the family was informed by the United States State Department that the comedian had died in Tanzania, where he had lived for approximately 18 years.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. His family has not been informed of the exact date he died or the cause of death, according to reports.

McFadden Built Name in American Comedy
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 30, 1968, McFadden developed a reputation on the American comedy circuit before making his breakthrough on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam in 1991.
The comedy showcase became an important platform for Black comedians during the 1990s, and McFadden’s performances helped introduce him to a wider television audience.
He later appeared on several popular television programmes, including Martin, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Coach and Moesha.
However, one of the biggest highlights of his career came when he joined the cast of Fox’s In Living Color during its fifth and final season between 1993 and 1994.
McFadden appeared in 23 episodes of the influential sketch-comedy series, taking on different characters and also contributing as a writer.
The programme, created by Keenen Ivory Wayans, became one of the defining comedy shows of its era.
His Career Extended Beyond Television
McFadden’s entertainment career also included film appearances, with credits in productions such as Jacob’s Ladder, Minor Adjustments and Little Nicky.
He also appeared on programmes including Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Late Show with David Letterman, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and Last Call with Carson Daly. He later had his own Comedy Central special and performed regularly in Las Vegas.
His work eventually extended beyond the United States, with McFadden establishing a new chapter of his life in Tanzania.
McFadden Lived in Tanzania for Nearly 20 Years
Unlike many American entertainers who remained based in Hollywood, McFadden spent roughly 18 years living and working in Tanzania.
According to reports, he was involved in several business ventures in the country and was associated with Olduvai Records, a music, gold-mining and entertainment production company.
The company reportedly worked with Sony Music’s The Orchard in New York on the international distribution of music and audiovisual productions.
McFadden also released an album titled ENJOY, Vol. 1 through the label in May 2025.
His decision to build part of his life and business career in Tanzania made him an unusual link between the American entertainment industry and East Africa.
Tributes Emerge Following His Death
News of McFadden’s death has sparked tributes from fellow entertainers and people who remember his work during the peak of his comedy career.
Comedian Tony Luewellyn mourned McFadden on Facebook, describing him as a fellow comedian and veteran of the comedy world.
The news has also prompted fans to revisit McFadden’s work from the 1990s, particularly his appearances on Def Comedy Jam and In Living Color.
Prof. Rel Dowdell, director of film studies at Hampton University, described McFadden as a talented veteran comedian and actor whose career demonstrated his versatility and dedication to entertainment.
McFadden is survived by family members including his children and siblings.
As tributes continue to emerge, many fans are remembering the Brooklyn-born entertainer for a career that took him from the American comedy circuit to Hollywood and, eventually, Tanzania, where he spent the final chapter of his life.
