Kenyans online have once again proven that they are not easily swayed, especially when it comes to pleas that appear to take advantage of their generosity.
Popular media personality and gospel minister Hellen Muthoni recently found herself on the receiving end of public criticism after publicly appealing for financial help to recover her repossessed car.
According to information gathered by Nairobi News, Muthoni revealed that her vehicle had been repossessed by the financing company after she defaulted on payments.
Shockingly, this marks the second time in 2025 that her car has been taken back.

“So my car got repossessed again , this is the second time this year. Words of encouragement and advice will go a long way. Thank you 🙏🏾,” she wrote in a social media post.
A few hours later, the media personality shared another post, this time including her Safaricom Till Number, asking well-wishers to contribute money to help her recover the car.
“Hello fam! After wide consultations, I’ve decided to share my Till Number with my friends and family to help me get my car back.
I know many of us have faced similar challenges, and your support — no matter how small — will truly make a difference.
Your kindness and generosity are deeply appreciated.
TILL NUMBER: 5986027 – Hellen Muthoni
Thank you and God bless you all!” she wrote.
However, what was meant to be a heartfelt plea quickly turned into a social media storm.
While a handful of fans sympathised with her and offered prayers, the majority accused her of entitlement, claiming that she was trying to exploit Kenyans already grappling with tough economic times.
Many argued that Muthoni, as a public figure, should not expect the public to fund her “flashy lifestyle”, especially when countless Kenyans are struggling to afford basic needs.

Below are some of the reactions from angry netizens:
Sami Wachira:
“Word of advice — unless a car is making money for you or is an absolute necessity in your work, avoid cars on loan.”
Abdikarim Hussein:
“Kenyan celebs are really hilarious. We now have to pay for their repossessed cars?”
Nya Siaya Liz:
“She said we’ve all gone through similar experiences… how much did she contribute to ours?”
Chunaa Salim:
“Na sisi nani atatuchangia za rent? 😂😂😂 Wao wanachanga za gari!”
Despite the backlash, Muthoni has yet to respond to the criticism.
But one thing is clear, Kenyans are no longer tolerating celebrity sympathy drives, especially those perceived as out of touch with the current economic reality.
