Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has stirred fresh debate online after sharing her thoughts on the highly publicised separation of Ugandan socialite Zari Hassan and her estranged husband, Shakib Cham.
The outspoken politician appeared to take a subtle swipe at the former couple’s joint breakup statement, questioning why some celebrities choose to publicly announce the end of their relationships.
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Nyamu reflected on her own past experiences and wondered why private matters between two people often become public declarations.

“I remember announcing a break-up a few years back. People who announce a break-up, why do you do it? How do the issues of two people suddenly become an announcement? Ati we have decided,” she wrote.
Her comments came just days after Zari and Shakib confirmed that they had ended their five-year relationship.
In a statement shared on social media, the pair said they had reached the difficult decision to part ways due to irreconcilable differences.
“After much thought and reflection, we believe it is best for us to separate due to irreconcilable differences,” part of their statement read. The former couple added that they would continue to respect and support each other despite the end of their marriage.
The breakup shocked many fans across East Africa, especially considering that Zari and Shakib had often showcased their romance online.
The two officially tied the knot in an Islamic Nikah ceremony held in South Africa in 2023 after dating for several years.
Zari, popularly known as “The Boss Lady,” had previously been in a high-profile relationship with Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz, with whom she shares two children.
Her relationship with Shakib was frequently featured on reality television and social media, earning them a loyal fan base.
While Nyamu did not directly mention Zari by name, many social media users interpreted her remarks as a reaction to the couple’s breakup announcement.
Her comments quickly sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that relationships should remain private, while others argued that public figures have a right to address issues that have become subjects of public interest.
Nyamu herself has had her fair share of public relationship drama.
Her past relationship with Mugithi singer Samidoh Muchoki often dominated headlines and attracted intense scrutiny from fans and critics alike.
As discussions continue online, Zari appears to be focusing on her personal growth.

In her first post following the separation announcement, the socialite shared a message suggesting she was embracing a new chapter in life.
“I have no prime, I will evolve till I die,” she wrote.
Whether Karen Nyamu intended to offer relationship advice or simply express her personal opinion, her comments have reignited conversations about how much celebrities owe the public when it comes to their private lives.
One thing is certain: in the age of social media, even the end of a romance can quickly become a topic of public debate.
