Karua: No decision yet on United Alternative Government presidential flag bearer

United Alternative Government (UAG) Co-Convenor Martha Karua has dismissed speculation over the coalition’s presidential flag bearer, saying no decision has been made on the process, criteria, or timeline for selecting its candidate.

In a statement issued on Thursday following numerous enquiries from supporters, the public and the media, Karua said the coalition was still finalising its formal structures, governance framework and rules before making any decisions on leadership.

Karua said she serves as Co-Convenor alongside Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and stressed that the coalition remains committed to consultation, inclusivity and adherence to agreed procedures.

She revealed that a Technical Committee chaired by former minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa had completed substantial work on proposals to formalise the coalition’s engagement and would soon present its recommendations to the coalition principals.

According to Karua, the principals are expected to meet at a retreat to consider and approve the committee’s proposals before discussing a common agenda on democratic renewal, economic transformation and constitutional governance.

She acknowledged that every Kenyan, including coalition principals and members, has the constitutional right to express personal preferences regarding the presidential candidate. However, she emphasised that selecting the coalition’s flag bearer is one of the most significant decisions the alliance will make and must therefore be determined collectively through an agreed consultative framework.

Karua urged coalition leaders, members and supporters to exercise patience, discipline and goodwill as the process unfolds.

She said the coalition remains united in its mission of restoring constitutionalism, rebuilding the economy, strengthening democratic institutions and providing accountable leadership, adding that its immediate priority is to strengthen the alliance while engaging Kenyans on issues affecting their daily lives.

Karua further disclosed that the Technical Committee had consulted both her and Kalonzo Musyoka in the past week to identify suitable dates for the principals’ retreat, expressing confidence that the meeting would be held soon.

She assured Kenyans that the United Alternative Government would communicate its decisions through its official structures and communication channels once the consultation process is complete.
