Kenya and Estonia Deepen Ties in Digital Economy and UN Reform Discussions


Kenya and Estonia have reaffirmed their strong bilateral relations, focusing on expanding cooperation in digital transformation, youth empowerment, and multilateral diplomacy.

The renewed commitment was made during bilateral talks between President Alar Karis of Estonia and a high-level Kenyan delegation held on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The two nations enjoy cordial relations rooted in shared values of innovation, good governance, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

In recent years, Kenya and Estonia have increasingly aligned on key global issues, with a focus on leveraging digital technologies to boost economic growth and public service delivery.

During the bilateral meeting, both sides discussed new avenues for partnership, particularly in the area of digital transformation, where Estonia is considered a global leader.

Kenya expressed its intention to learn from Estonia’s advanced digital infrastructure and e-governance models as part of its broader agenda to strengthen its digital economy and create job opportunities for young people.

“Kenya and Estonia continue to deepen our ties and explore new areas of partnership, particularly in digital transformation. We aim to harness technology to drive our economy forward and empower our youth with new opportunities,” said Kenyan President.

The leaders also exchanged views on ongoing global governance challenges, expressing shared support for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations system, especially the UN Security Council, to ensure fair representation and effectiveness in tackling 21st-century challenges.

“We are working together on the multilateral stage to advocate for meaningful reforms United Nations,” President Ruto side.

President Alar Karis welcomed Kenya’s commitment to digital innovation and lauded the country’s role in regional peace and stability.

He emphasized Estonia’s willingness to collaborate further in cybersecurity, e-governance, and digital education, as well as to enhance trade and investment ties between the two countries.

The bilateral talks come at a time when global leaders are convening in New York for the annual UNGA session to discuss pressing global issues such as climate change, economic recovery, peace and security, and sustainable development.

Kenya and Estonia have maintained diplomatic relations since 2004, with increasing engagement in recent years through both bilateral and multilateral platforms, including cooperation within the United Nations, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and digital development forums.

As both countries look to the future, the bilateral dialogue in New York serves as a significant step toward transformative partnerships that can benefit not only their populations but also contribute to global progress.
