Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga has chaired the sixth meeting of the Joint Health Cooperation Framework Steering Committee as Kenya and the United States reviewed progress in implementing their bilateral health partnership.
The meeting brought together senior officials from both governments, including US Deputy Chief of Mission Ms. Carla Bernini, Head of the Project Management Unit (PMU) Dr. Mohammed Abdi Sheikh, representatives from the Council of Governors and National Treasury, as well as technical partners.
Discussions centred on the transition of health programmes supported through the partnership to sustainable, government-led systems.
Officials also reviewed measures to manage potential risks, financing arrangements and preparations for the next phase of cooperation between Kenya and the United States.
Oluga said the discussions were important in ensuring that ongoing health programmes remain aligned with Kenya’s priorities while building stronger and more sustainable systems.
“Our focus is to ensure that the transition of supported health programmes is sustainable, government-led and aligned with Kenya’s long-term health priorities,” Oluga said.
The committee also considered ways of strengthening government ownership of programmes while ensuring that essential health services are not disrupted during the transition.
US officials reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration with Kenya as both countries work towards strengthening the health sector.
“Kenya and the United States remain committed to a strong health partnership that supports sustainable outcomes and responds to the country’s health priorities,” officials said.
The meeting further underscored the importance of coordinated financing, effective risk management and close collaboration among national and county governments and development partners.
The two governments agreed to continue working together to ensure the next phase of the cooperation framework contributes to a resilient health system capable of delivering sustainable services to Kenyans.
The discussions form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Kenya-US health cooperation while gradually increasing government leadership and ownership of key health programmes.
