Kenya’s Balmer Healthcare to establish world-class Sh26 billion tertiary facility in Eldoret

Balmer Healthcare Limited has partnered with India-based Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd (AHEL) to establish a state-of-the-art tertiary care hospital in Kenya.

This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two agencies.

The partnership marks a significant step in strengthening healthcare delivery in Kenya and the wider region, with the facility expected to serve over 50 million people across the country and neighbouring nations.

The planned hospital will offer comprehensive medical services across more than 20 specialties, catering to patients of all age groups—from paediatric to adult care, officials said.

The collaboration aims to reduce the need for Kenyans to seek advanced treatment abroad, particularly in India, by bringing world-class services closer to home.

Backed by financing from the Government of India, the initiative reflects strong global confidence in Kenya’s healthcare sector, officials said.

This is a project to benefit Kenyans and transform access to healthcare. We are bringing world-class services closer to home,” — Koima Langat, the CEO of Balmer Healthcare Limited.

“We are bringing India to Kenya. Patients will now access the same quality care within their own country.”

The announcement was made during the Fourth Kenya International Investment Forum in Nairobi, hosted by William Ruto, where Kenya’s position as a leading investment hub in Africa was reinforced.

Apollo Hospitals will deploy its highly experienced medical specialists, working alongside Balmer Healthcare, to improve access to complex procedures and advanced treatments locally.

The project will be executed in four phases which include technical consulting and strategic planning, project management and monitoring, project commissioning and brand operations management

The MoU was signed in 2022 by Dinesh Madhavan, President Group Oncology and International at Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, and David Langat, Chairman of Balmer Healthcare Limited.

Koima said the project is being financed by an Indian bank at USD200 million.

“Balmer Healthcare will build the hospital while Apollo will run it in terms of operations,” he said.

He said the project will expand the healthcare sector at large and enable Kenyans gain more.

Koima was among executives who attended the investment Forum in Nairobi, where president Ruto advanced high-level discussions on regional integration and investment.

Ruto highlighted Kenya’s competitive strengths, our strategic location, a youthful and skilled population, and the drive for innovative investments that strengthen resilience and accelerate development.

He encouraged investors to seize opportunities in trade, technology, manufacturing and green industries, sectors that are shaping Africa’s fastest-growing economies.

The forum brought together Cabinet Secretaries, Governors, global investors, development partners and private sector leaders, all focused on unlocking practical investment opportunities and positioning Kenya as a leading hub for regional and continental growth.

Speaking earlier during the signing, Madhavan said Apollo aims to expand its global impact by supporting more lives through accessible, high-quality healthcare.

“Apollo Hospitals is the largest hospital group in Asia with over 75 hospitals in India and is a destination for many Kenyans seeking treatment. With our entry into Nairobi, we aim to bring our expertise and personalised care closer to patients here,” he said.

Langat who is a major businessman in Kenya noted that the partnership will significantly ease the burden on Kenyans who travel abroad for treatment.

“We are bringing India to Kenya. Patients will now access the same world-class healthcare services within their own country,” he said.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Rohit Vadhwana, Deputy High Commissioner of India in Kenya.

Apollo Hospitals, one of Asia’s largest integrated healthcare providers, operates more than 75 hospitals and has treated over 150 million patients from more than 140 countries.

The group is globally recognized for advanced medical services, telemedicine, and healthcare capacity building.

The new Eldoret facility is expected to play a transformative role in Kenya’s healthcare landscape by enhancing local capacity, improving access to specialized care, and supporting the development of a robust healthcare ecosystem.
