The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has confirmed an ownership dispute involving Karura Forest and Muthaiga Golf Club, with the golf club claiming ownership of a parcel that allegedly encroaches on the gazetted forest.
According to a status brief by the Kenya Forest Service, Karura Forest was surveyed in the early 1920s, with the survey registered in 1923.
The forest, which covers approximately 1,041.1 hectares, was declared a Forest Reserve through Proclamation No. 44 of 1932. It was later declared a Central Forest, alongside other state forests gazetted before independence, through Legal Notice No. 174 of May 20, 1964.
KFS says Muthaiga Golf Club claims ownership of Land Reference Number 13134/3, a parcel that allegedly encroaches onto the gazetted Karura Forest by approximately 21.8 hectares.
The conflicting ownership positions have prompted plans for a meeting at the Kenya Forest Service headquarters, where the two entities are expected to seek an amicable resolution to the dispute.
The meeting is intended to address the competing claims and establish a mutually acceptable way forward regarding the disputed portion of land.
