KJSEA results released as Kenya prepares for senior school placement under CBC

The Ministry of Education has released the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results, marking a major milestone for learners transitioning to Senior School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The assessment introduced a structured achievement-level system designed to help parents, teachers, and learners better understand performance across nine learning areas. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba outlined the new framework, which groups learners into four major achievement categories—each tied to percentage ranges and corresponding point values.

The categories, each subdivided into two levels, are as follows:

  1. Exceeding Expectations (EE) – Scores between 75% and 100%.
    • 90–100%: 8 points
    • 75–89%: 7 points
  2. Meeting Expectations (ME) – Scores between 41% and 74%.
    • 58–74%: 6 points
    • 41–57%: 5 points
  3. Approaching Expectations (AE) – Scores between 21% and 40%.
    • 31–40%: 4 points
    • 21–30%: 3 points
  4. Below Expectations (BE) – Scores below 21%.
    • 11–20%: 2 points
    • 1–10%: 1 point

With a maximum of 8 points per learning area, the highest possible total score is 72 points, while 36 points represents the national performance benchmark.

CS Ogamba announced that learner placement into Senior Schools will begin next week and run until December 20, 2025, with Grade 10 students expected to report on January 12, 2026.

“Learners will be placed based on their performance and selected pathway,” he said, noting that the final Grade 9 placement score consists of 20% from KPSEA, 20% from School-Based Assessments (Grades 7 and 8), and 60% from the KJSEA summative evaluation.

The Ministry noted that all existing secondary schools have been clustered according to the pathways they will offer. Kenya’s 9,540 Senior Schools collectively hold a capacity of 2.2 million learners, while 929,262 learners are set to exit after completing KCSE this year.

More than 1.13 million candidates sat for the KJSEA in October. Parents can now access results through multiple official channels:
