An M-Pesa agent was fatally stabbed in her shop on Friday evening in a suspected robbery incident in Shauri Moyo estate, Kisumu Central sub-county.
The victim, Mercy Muthoni, was attacked by a lone assailant who reportedly entered her shop through the back door armed with a kitchen knife.
Police say the suspect stabbed her in the neck before attempting to flee.
The attacker, identified as Justin Otieno, 29, was pursued by members of the public who caught up with him shortly after the incident.
According to a police report, the suspect was subjected to mob justice and died on the spot.
Muthoni was rushed to Star Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police officers who visited the scene recovered the murder weapon along with several personal documents believed to belong to Otieno.
These included his national ID card, school certificate, baptism certificate, KRA PIN, birth certificate, and school leaving certificate.
The bodies of the victim and the suspect have been taken to Star Hospital Mortuary and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary, respectively, pending post-mortem examinations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based at Kondele Police Station has launched investigations into the incident.
Police have urged the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of reporting criminal activity to authorities for appropriate legal action.
