Meanwhile, police arrested a 25-year-old man and recovered an illegal firearm following a shootout between security officers and armed herders at Buffalo Springs National Reserve in Isiolo County.
The incident occurred on October 25, 2026, after rangers received information that suspected Samburu herders had driven large herds of cattle into the protected reserve.
According to police, the reserve’s Chief Ranger, Alu Adan, mobilised a team of rangers and General Service Unit (GSU) officers from Shaba to investigate the reported encroachment.
Upon arrival, the team found numerous herds of cattle grazing inside the reserve without their herders and drove them out of the protected area.
However, as the officers returned to their camps, they encountered armed herders, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
The suspected herders reportedly fled into nearby thickets after being overpowered, while one suspect was arrested.
Police said the suspect was found in possession of an allegedly illegal firearm described in the report as a Calben rifle, fitted with a magazine containing 15 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition.
A black JX mobile phone was also recovered from him.
The firearm, ammunition and mobile phone were secured as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.
No casualties were reported among the security officers involved in the operation.
Security teams have since heightened their alertness and remain on standby for any further incidents as investigations continue into the suspected illegal grazing and firearm possession.
