Police in Kisii South Sub-County are investigating the death of a 47-year-old man who was found dead in his house after his wife returned from an overnight visit.
The deceased, identified as Richard Gesicho, was discovered on Tuesday morning at his home in Nyawekwa Village, Bonyando Sub-location, Bogiakumu Location.
According to police, the man’s wife returned home at about 7 a.m. after visiting her sister-in-law in the Bomwanda area. She found the door to their house wide open and, upon entering the bedroom, found her husband lying on his back on the bed.
She tried to wake him but realized he was unresponsive and alerted the authorities.
Police visited the scene and established that the deceased had no visible physical injuries or signs of a struggle.
Police said the exact time of death remains unknown because the man had been alone at home when he died.
The body was moved to Nyangena Private Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Nyabisase Secondary School in Nyamache, Kisii County was closed as investigations intensify into the violent unrest that rocked the institution on Monday.
School administrators are now counting losses running into millions of shillings following the five-hour rampage.
More than 50 CCTV cameras were destroyed by students in what school officials believe was a deliberate attempt to conceal their identities and frustrate investigations.
The school, home to more than 3,500 students, now stands deserted. Classrooms that only a day ago were full of learners are empty, with destruction evident almost everywhere.
School officials said the boys engaged teachers in a running battle, hurling stones for nearly five hours without relenting.
The chairman of the school’s Board of Management, Elijah Ombwori, says the dispute stemmed from the posting of a new principal to the institution.
“In the morning, the boys were supposed to attend the parade but they refused. The teachers asked for reinforcement from the police and, given the large student population, the boys started throwing stones. They didn’t want the incoming principal to take over,” said Ombwori.
Videos recorded during Monday’s unrest showed several students covering their faces with pieces of paper.
School officials now believe the students deliberately concealed their identities before vandalising more than 50 CCTV cameras installed across the institution.
“They were covering their faces. The school has CCTV cameras which they vandalised, and the investigative agencies are going to unearth what happened,” he added.
The Board chairman further said some of the students attempted to force their way into the girls’ dormitories.
The angry students broke into one of the school’s stores, accessed farm tools, used them to destroy the main entrance to one of the dormitories before setting it ablaze.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations continue combing through the scene in search of any surviving footage or evidence that could help identify those responsible for the destruction of school property.
And 23 students from Tambach Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County were arrested following unrest at the school on Monday night.
The students were arrested after they were allegedly found coercing fellow learners to participate in protests.
During the unrest, the students reportedly smashed window panes in nine dormitories while demanding the immediate reinstatement of colleagues who had been suspended following a recent strike.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said officers are conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mulinge said the students are expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, adding that their actions amounted to a criminal offence.
The latest incident comes as the school continues to grapple with repeated disruptions to learning, having experienced more than three student protests in recent months.
Keiyo North MP Adams Kipsanai has called for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged use of marijuana and other drugs among students in Elgeyo Marakwet County, saying substance abuse is a major contributor to rising cases of indiscipline, school unrest and destruction of property in learning institutions.
