Mob steals cereals after lorry is involved in accident in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County

A mob broke into a lorry and stole assorted cereals valued at Sh1.3 million following an accident on the Eldoret -Webuye highway, in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County.

The driver of the lorry told police that he drove from Malaba border, destined to Eldoret where he was to deliver the cereals and on reaching Jua Kali trading centre at Kambi Kuku area, he was involved in a non-injury self-involved road traffic accident on September 20.

He alleged that the said lorry landed on its left side before members of public broke into the said lorry and made a way with all the cereals.

The said driver was in custody to assist with investigations, police said.

Such incidents have been on the rise on the major highways where mobs descend on lorries involved in accidents and steal valuables.

Police investigations show some of the accidents are intentional after the drivers and loaders have sold off the valuables and stage the incidents to justify the same.

Some of the cases are pending in courts, police said following arrets of the suspects involved.

Police discourage mobs against stealing the goods as some could be harmful to them and their families.

Some suspects who stole the valuables were later arrested and charged in courts, police said.

As part of efforts to address the trend, police have deployed patrol teams on major routes. The teams are supposed to respond to such incidents and help the victims while working with local police officers.

Police decry lack of sufficient resources for the slow or failure to respond to the scenes.

Authorities have pledged to increase the patrols on the expansive routes as a mitigation to the same trend.
