Moi University has confirmed the termination of 800 staff members as part of a “right-sizing” initiative designed to address the institution’s ongoing financial challenges.
In a statement issued by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Loice Maru to the affected employees, the university cited its financial difficulties as the primary reason behind the decision.
The notice, which is in compliance with Section 40 of the Employment Act 2007 and the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement, informed employees that their positions were among those identified for redundancy.
“We regret to inform you that due to financial constraints currently facing the university, a decision has been made to implement a right-sizing exercise.
Following a thorough review of the university’s operational needs and financial sustainability, your position has been identified as one of those affected by the redundancy process,” the letter stated.
The redundancy process will take effect 30 days from the notice date, with the university assuring the employees that this decision is not a reflection of their individual performance or conduct.
Instead, it described the move as a necessary step in response to financial constraints beyond its control.

DVC Loice Maru further explained that affected employees would be entitled to all terminal benefits as per the Employment Act 2007 and the relevant Collective Bargaining Agreement.
These benefits include notice pay or payment in lieu of notice, severance pay, accrued leave days, and any other dues specified in the terms of employment.
“Please be assured that this decision is in no way a reflection of your performance or conduct, but rather a necessary organizational response to financial constraints beyond our control,” Maru emphasized in the letter.
Final payments will be processed and deposited into employees’ usual bank accounts.
Employees have also been requested to return any university property in their possession by their last working day to ensure a smooth clearance process.
This move comes amid broader financial challenges within the higher education sector, with many universities struggling with reduced funding and operational sustainability.
Moi University has assured the affected staff that the institution remains committed to supporting them throughout this transition.
