The mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula, has passed away.
The sad news was announced by Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka on Friday, December 20, 2024.
Anne Nanyama, who was also the mother of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, was remembered by Governor Lusaka as a transformative figure.
“I have received the sorrowful news of the passing of Mama Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula, the beloved mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, Fred Wetang’ula, and others,” Lusaka said.
The governor paid tribute to her as a mentor and community leader whose compassion and wisdom had a lasting impact on many lives.
“A remarkable community mobilizer, mentor, and family matriarch, she positively transformed countless lives through her compassion, wisdom, and selfless deeds.
During this profoundly difficult time, may her family and loved ones find comfort and strength in the cherished memories of her remarkable life and the enduring love she leaves behind,” Lusaka added.
Numerous leaders have expressed their condolences to the family, including Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who sent his deepest sympathies via X.
“I send my deepest condolences to my brother Honourable Wetang’ula, Hon Wanyonyi and their entire family for this deep loss and pray that God grants them the fortitude and grace to bear Khukhu’s departure from our midst.
May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Kingi wrote.
Kanduyi MP John Makali also extended his condolences, recalling Mama Anne’s strong moral foundation that shaped two influential leaders in the country.
“Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Timothy Wanyonyi MP Westlands, and the entire Wetang’ula family, I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your beloved mother, Khukhu Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula.
The strong moral foundation she instilled in her family has produced leaders who continue to serve our country with distinction.
I share in your grief during this difficult time,” Makali said.
Moses Wetang’ula, who was appointed Speaker of the National Assembly in 2022, had served as the Minister for Trade before becoming Bungoma Senator in 2013.
He was re-elected in 2017 and 2022 before resigning to take up the Speaker’s position.
His brother, Timothy Wanyonyi, has represented Westlands since 2017 and defended his seat in 2022. He has also hinted at plans to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027.
