Members of the National Assembly have called for the resignation of Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, accusing him of inciting the public against the government.
The MPs have also threatened to introduce an impeachment motion against Muturi following his controversial remarks, in which he labeled National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji as the “abductor-in-chief.”
The heated exchange took place during a special sitting of the National Assembly, which also saw the confirmation of three Cabinet Secretary nominees with ties to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mutahi Kagwe was approved for the Agriculture docket, William Kabogo for ICT, and Lee Kinyanjui for Investments, Trade, and Industry.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah criticized Muturi for allegedly using his public platform to stoke ethnic and regional tensions.
“It is unfortunate that some Cabinet Secretaries are now playing to the public gallery and inciting emotions based on ethnicity and their regional backgrounds,” Ichung’wah said.
Minority Leader Junet Mohamed joined in, questioning the timing of Muturi’s accusations, suggesting that if his son had been arrested, he should have clarified the matter sooner.
“Why wait for seven months to make these claims?” Mohamed remarked.
Many MPs suggested that Muturi’s actions were fueled by resentment over his demotion in Cabinet.
They urged him to resign, with some even hinting at an impeachment motion should he refuse to step down.
“The honorable thing for a CS to do is to resign. If you feel demoted, step aside,” Ichung’wah added.
“We know you’re close to being fired, and you want to keep stealing.”
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi drew an indirect comparison between Muturi and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing a “chief” from Mathira who was removed for similar behavior.
Muturi made headlines this week when he linked Haji to a series of alleged abductions, including the kidnapping of his own son, Leslie Muturi, during the Gen Z-led protests.
The controversy has escalated tensions within the government.
The National Assembly is now adjourned until next month, following a lengthy recess.
