The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) recently marked its 20-year milestone with a colourful three-day celebration at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa, held from Friday, November 14, to Sunday, November 16.
According to the party, the event was meant to commemorate two decades of political service, sacrifice and struggle.
ODM also used the occasion to honour the legacy of its late party leader, Raila Odinga.
One of the biggest highlights of the festivities was the ODM@20 Founders’ Dinner, which brought together high-profile invited guests, including President William Ruto.
His attendance took centre stage, with many observers describing it as a surprising show of political unity under the current broad-based government.

While the event wrapped up smoothly, what followed online left many Kenyans in stitches.
Photos from the celebrations trended from Saturday evening into Sunday, but it was not the speeches or the guest list that captured attention; it was the ODM@20 anniversary cake.
Multiple photos showing President Ruto, members of Raila Odinga’s family and various ODM leaders cutting the cake went viral.
But instead of admiration, netizens zeroed in on the cake’s questionable appearance.

A large number of Kenyans trooped to social media to poke fun at whoever was responsible for commissioning the cake.
Many felt the design, colours and decorations fell embarrassingly short for a major political party marking such a significant milestone.
Some accused the organisers of undermining an otherwise well-executed event with what they described as a poorly baked and decorated cake.
Others went further, saying the cake simply looked “ugly” and not befitting ODM’s status.

Below are some of the reactions from amused and disappointed Kenyans:
Sarah Haluwa:
“I can’t prove it but I know nepotism was involved in the making of this cake 🤣. Anga nipe budget ya cake mtoto wangu anajua baking 🤣🤣.”
Augustine Aghahoa:
“Follow ODM for more comedy 😂😂😂.”
Mark Mwenda:
“Ilipikwa na UDA.”
Tom Mogusu:
“That’s typically ODM… always failing and falling at the last hurdle 😂😂.”
