A suspected violent robber has been apprehended in Mombasa following a chilling attack on a watchman that was captured on CCTV and widely circulated on social media.
The viral footage shows the suspect, armed with a panga, alongside an accomplice, viciously assaulting the unsuspecting security guard before fleeing with his mobile phone.
The brazen attack sparked outrage online, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an intensive manhunt.
Officers from the Mombasa DCI Regional Headquarters, together with DCI Urban and Tononoka Police Station, traced the prime suspect, identified as Salim Keya Ngesa, to a guesthouse in Bondeni “A” where he had been hiding. He was arrested without incident.
During the arrest, police recovered six mobile phones, a blood-stained panga, two knives, and a greyish kanzu matching the attire worn by the suspect in the CCTV footage.
Ngesa is currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of arraignment, while detectives continue to track his accomplice, who remains at large.
The arrest highlights the DCI’s ongoing commitment to curbing violent street crimes and sending a strong message to criminals operating in Mombasa.
