ODM’s Linda Mwananchi faction truck attacked En route to Kakamega rally

A truck affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was reportedly stoned while en route to Kakamega County ahead of a rally scheduled for Saturday, February 21.

According to videos shared by Edwin Sifuna, the truck was part of a convoy traveling through the Kona Mbaya trading center on Friday morning when it came under attack.

In the footage, a turnboy appears to be heckling movement slogans moments before a rock strikes the vehicle.

Panic ensued as the driver struggled to keep the truck on the road, while the turnboy ducked toward the floor to avoid being hit.

Voices of fear and alarm are audible from inside the truck before the video abruptly ends. No casualties have been reported from the incident.

Responding to the attack, Sifuna insisted that the faction, which includes James Orengo and Babu Owino, would proceed to Kakamega for the planned rally.

The attack comes a day after Sifuna warned against potential disruptions, noting that he had formally notified the Kakamega OCPD and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen via WhatsApp of the upcoming rally.

Sifuna added that he had circulated the notice on the Senate WhatsApp group, of which Murkomen remains a member as a former senator, and had also sent the notice directly to Murkomen’s personal number.

“Since Murkomen remains on the Senate WhatsApp group as a former senator, I have shared the notice for the Kakamega rally both in the group and directly to his personal WhatsApp number, so he cannot later claim he was unaware of the event, as he did with the Kitengela rally,” Sifuna said.

The remarks follow CS Murkomen’s claim that he had not been notified about the disrupted Kitengela rally, which resulted in two deaths and over fifty injuries.

Murkomen further accused the opposition of timing the event to coincide with a market day to attract crowds and alleged that goons from Machakos were involved in causing chaos.

Separately, on Thursday, the DCP party sent a letter to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja notifying him of their intention to visit his office on February 20.

However, the visit was cancelled after all members of the United Opposition opted not to attend, later filing a lawsuit against the Inspector General over his alleged reluctance to take action against police inaction.
