A fatal road traffic accident occurred on the evening of July 4, 2025, at approximately 4:55 PM along the Kisii-Oyugis road in the Riverside area, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuries to several others.
According to a police report filed under OB number 60/4/7/2025 at the Nyanchwa Traffic Base, the accident involved a Toyota Matatu with registration number KBN 426U, which was being driven by Charles Momanyi.
The driver sustained head and left leg injuries and was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH), where he is currently admitted in fair condition.
One of the passengers, Pauline Migosi, aged 32, tragically died on the spot from a severe head injury.
Her body was taken to the KTRH mortuary pending post-mortem.
Other passengers who sustained injuries include Rose Auma, 50, with a head injury; Alex Otieno Okoth, 30, with a head injury and fractured right hand; Abel Marunga, 33, with head and right-hand injuries; Rob Omete, 35, with a head injury and back pain; and David Omondi, 21, with injuries to his left leg and hand.
The injured were taken to Bosongo Hospital and other nearby health facilities, where they are reported to be in fair condition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle, which was traveling from Kisii town towards Oyugis, developed a mechanical problem, causing the driver to lose control and plunge into a ditch.
Police officers visited the scene and took appropriate action.
The vehicle has since been towed to the Nyanchwa Police Station yard, where it is being held for inspection.
The case has been recorded as “Pending Under Investigation” (PUI), with the cause of the accident preliminarily classified as mechanical failure under Cause Code 26.
Authorities have urged motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance to prevent similar tragedies.
