One person has died and two others are hospitalized at the Narok County Referral Hospital following a suspected case of chemical poisoning in the Katakala area of Narok South Sub-County.
The deceased, 32-year-old Phinehas Muturi, passed away on Monday around 1:00 PM just three hours after being admitted with severe symptoms believed to be caused by herbicide exposure.
He had been brought in alongside 36-year-old Peter Macharia, who remains in critical condition.
According to a police report filed Thursday and obtained by media, both men showed signs of serious chemical exposure, including chest and throat pain, breathing difficulties, yellowing of the eyes, and body corrosion.
The incident was brought to light by Dennis Kipunel, the Narok Central Sub-County Coordinator of Disease Surveillance and Response.
On Wednesday afternoon, another man, 35-year-old Daniel Maina, was admitted with similar symptoms. His condition has since stabilized.
In a statement to authorities, Maina said he and nine others had been hired to spray chemicals on a farm in Katakala between April 15 and April 18, under the supervision of a manager identified as Mr. Joseph.
Maina first sought treatment at Ereteti Dispensary for skin irritation, but his worsening condition led to his referral to the county hospital where he learned of the earlier cases and Muturi’s death.
Narok South police have launched an investigation to identify the chemicals used and assess possible safety breaches. The specific substances involved remain unidentified.
