One student dies, 10 injured after septic tank collapses at Kapsabet school for the deaf

One student has died and 10 others were injured after a septic tank collapsed at AIC Kapsabet School for the Deaf on Thursday morning.

According to authorities, the students had gathered within the school compound to catch a glimpse of William Ruto, whose motorcade was passing near the institution.

The learners reportedly stood on top of an old septic tank measuring about 20 feet long, which later caved in under their combined weight.

Officials said the tank collapsed suddenly, plunging 11 students inside.

The incident was confirmed by Angeline Kirui, who was among the first responders at the scene.

“Eleven learners fell into the septic tank after it collapsed. One student unfortunately lost their life while the others sustained injuries,” Kirui said.

Rescue teams, including county disaster officers, rushed to the school to retrieve the students from the collapsed structure. The injured were later taken to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, President Ruto briefly stopped at the school to console the students and staff and expressed regret over the tragedy.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of a young life following this unfortunate incident. We will support the school to improve its infrastructure and ensure the safety of learners,” the President said.

During the visit, the Head of State donated Sh 5 million to support infrastructure development at the school.

He later proceeded with his scheduled visit to Kapsabet Girls High School.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident, with concerns raised about the condition and safety of aging infrastructure within the school compound.
