Opposition condemns attack on Kawira Mwangaza during Mashujaa Day celebrations

Opposition leaders have condemned an attack on former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Githongo Market in Central Imenti, Meru County, demanding investigations and prosecution of those responsible.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the opposition said Mwangaza’s vehicles were destroyed, equipment stolen and several members of her staff injured during the incident.

The statement said Mwangaza had been invited to the celebrations by the County Commissioner and had every right to attend the national event without facing violence or intimidation.

“Mashujaa Day belongs to all Kenyans, regardless of their political affiliation,” the statement said.

The opposition expressed concern that the incident came a day after Mwangaza reported an earlier attack at Gituine Village in Igembe Central, raising further questions about her safety.

It also criticised the Council of Governors for what it described as silence over alleged threats and intimidation against Mwangaza and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

The statement urged the council to speak out against what it termed political persecution and defend the safety and dignity of both serving and former governors, irrespective of their political affiliations.

“Its silence in the face of these attacks is unacceptable,” the statement said.

The opposition further accused unnamed actors of using sponsored gangs to target opposition leaders and their supporters, demanding an end to what it described as a pattern of political violence.

It called for prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into the Githongo Market incident and the earlier attack reported by Mwangaza, insisting that those found responsible must be held accountable.

The statement was signed by Pauline Njoroge, Head of Communication at the National Secretariat.

Police had not provided a response in the statement to the allegations surrounding the incidents.
