Party lovers shut down deejay for playing Bongo Flava, order him to play Kenyan music

Kenyan music lovers have officially had it with the flood of foreign music dominating local entertainment spaces, especially tracks from Tanzanian artists who campaigned for President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

This frustration exploded dramatically at the Nganya Awards gala on Saturday, November 29, when revellers went into full revolt after the DJ spun a set packed with Bongo hits, mostly from Wasafi Classic portfolio.

According to renowned filmmaker Steve Kipande, alias Daddi Q, who witnessed the chaos firsthand at the KICC grounds, the crowd turned hostile the moment the DJ leaned heavily into Tanzanian tracks, blatantly sidelining Kenyan artists.

Attendees shouted him down, with some nearly hurling objects in protest.

The rejection was so intense that the crowd wouldn’t even move to Otile Brown’s songs, insisting instead that the DJ play Kenyan favourites like Toxic Lyrically.

“Mpeni Vincent Kras ujumbe Kenya 🇰🇪 finally won… kesho na upload video dj amecheza Pawa Pawa fans wamekataa mpaka akacheza Toxic Lyrically walikataa mpaka Otile,” Steve Kipande wrote on Facebook.

The situation escalated so quickly that security personnel and the event’s emcee were forced to intervene to calm the charged-up revellers, who vowed they didn’t want to hear another second of Bongo Flava.

Throughout the night, many attendees echoed a resounding message: it’s time for Kenyan deejays to prioritize Kenyan music and push it at every opportunity.

The debate spilled onto social media, where many Kenyans applauded the revellers for calling out the DJ’s playlist choices and demanding better support for local talent.
