Pesa Otas: IShowSpeed, crew stun Kenyans with Sh4.5 million streaming equipment

Nairobi was brought to a standstill on Sunday, December 11, as celebrated American internet sensation Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, captivated the city during his six-hour visit.

True to his trademark style, the high-energy content creator live-streamed every activity on his itinerary to more than 48 million followers across the globe.

During the stream, he reportedly gained over 360,000 new subscribers in real time, with a significant number of them being Kenyans who tuned in to watch his every move in the city.

While the visit itself and the packed lineup of activities impressed many fans, what truly stunned a majority of viewers was the flawless quality of the live stream.

Despite moving through busy streets and crowded locations, the broadcast ran seamlessly, with no drag, delays, or buffering, something rarely witnessed in outdoor live streams of that scale.

This exceptional quality wowed fans and content creation enthusiasts alike, prompting many to wonder about the kind of high-end equipment IShowSpeed and his crew use to achieve such near-perfect results.

To answer that question, Nairobi News conducted online research and uncovered details about the streaming gear used by the YouTube star and its estimated cost.

IShowSpeed reportedly uses about three cameras during his streams, with the primary one being a Sony FX6 camera.

Known for its superior video quality and performance in different lighting conditions, the FX6 retails at over Sh700,000 in the local market.

To enhance viewing angles and capture wider shots, the crew also invested in several wide lenses, with at least one estimated to cost around Sh250,000.

These lenses help deliver the sharp visuals and dynamic perspectives that fans have come to associate with his content.

However, the heart of IShowSpeed’s streaming operation lies in the specialised backpack often carried by one of his cameramen.

The backpack houses a powerful streaming gadget that collects all audio and video feeds, processes them in real time, and broadcasts the content live to millions of viewers worldwide simultaneously.

This advanced streaming backpack alone is estimated to cost about Sh2 million, making it one of the most expensive and crucial pieces of equipment operated by his team.

When the total cost of all the gadgets is added up, including cameras, lenses, and streaming hardware, the YouTube star is estimated to have invested more than Sh4.5 million in streaming equipment alone.

While the figures may seem staggering, the investment has clearly paid off.

The top-tier equipment continues to deliver consistent, high-quality streams, helping IShowSpeed grow his global audience and cement his position as one of the world’s most influential digital content creators.
