Police in Nakuru East have launched investigations after the body of a 30-year-old man was found in a trench with multiple stab wounds in the early hours of Wednesday, January 21.
The deceased was identified as Martin Muthomi, a mechanic who was reportedly living alone in the area.
Residents told authorities that they heard a loud scream at around midnight but were too fearful to leave their homes.
At daybreak, Muthomi’s body was discovered bearing two deep stab wounds to the abdomen, with signs of heavy blood loss.
According to local administrators, the victim’s intestines were exposed at the time his body was found, indicating the severity of the attack.
“Reports indicate that at around midnight there was a loud scream. Some residents attempted to respond but were afraid.
In the morning, a body was found with two stab wounds to the stomach, and he lost a lot of blood, which caused his death,” the area chief said.
The chief added that the area has recently experienced rising insecurity, with reports of young men on motorcycles targeting residents in robbery attacks.
However, police say it is too early to determine whether robbery was the motive behind Muthomi’s killing.
“There has been insecurity in the area, with young men on motorbikes robbing people. However, the incident occurred at night and there were no eyewitnesses, so we cannot conclusively state what happened,” the chief added.
Nakuru County has in recent months recorded a surge in violent robberies and killings linked to suspected criminal gangs.
In October 2025, four suspects accused of murdering a police officer attempted to escape from Nakuru Law Courts during a court appearance but were later rearrested.
Earlier, on June 1, 2025, a police officer was fatally shot in an ambush in the Freehold area, leaving two other officers critically injured.
Investigations linked the attack to organised criminal syndicates operating in Nakuru East.
In late May 2025, two fatal attacks were reported within 48 hours. Paul Dong was killed inside his shop in Ndege Ndimu, while Jackson Wangi was fatally shot in the Pipeline area.
During the same period, a resident, Enoch Kipkoech, was shot dead in Arap Chumo while responding to distress calls during a raid on a trader’s shop.
Earlier in the year, a 24-year-old shop owner in Soilo was attacked with machetes and daggers before being shot dead by a gang that made away with hundreds of thousands of shillings.
Police officers, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), are continuing investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Muthomi’s death and to determine those responsible.
