Police officer, 21-year-old rider injured in Kisii shooting

A police officer and a 21-year-old motorcycle rider sustained gunshot injuries during a confrontation between police and members of the public at Sengera Shopping Centre in Gucha Sub-County, Kisii County.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, October 22, after officers on patrol received a tip-off from a member of the public that three motorcycles, each carrying three people, were suspected to be transporting armed and dangerous individuals.

According to police, officers later spotted two motorcycles parked outside a nearby bar. When they approached, the owners reportedly fled, prompting the officers to take the motorcycles to Sengera Police Station.

The officers resumed their patrol and later spotted another motorcycle approaching and parking near Graceland Pub.

Police said the rider became violent and engaged officers in a physical confrontation when they approached him.

The situation escalated as a crowd gathered, with a police officer firing eight rounds from an AK-47 rifle in an attempt to disperse the crowd and rescue Police Constable Boniface Kimani, who had reportedly been pinned down.

During the incident, one officer sustained a gunshot wound above his left eye. He was rushed to Omorembe Community Hospital before being referred to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment. He was reported to be in stable condition.

The motorcycle rider, 21, also sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh during the confrontation. He was admitted to Neoyan Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
