Police officer stabbed while resisting robbery in Nairobi

A police officer attached to Mowlem Police Station is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed while fighting off suspected robbers in Nairobi’s Mowlem area early Monday.

The officer was attacked at about 4.05 a.m. while walking home with his wife from a tavern in Kayole where they had gone for drinks.

According to police, the couple had reached Judia Courts in Mowlem Heights when they were confronted by three men riding a motorcycle and armed with a knife.

The officer reportedly resisted the attempted robbery and fought off the attackers, who fled the scene. During the struggle, however, he sustained two stab wounds to the neck and an injury to his left eye.

Fellow officers who responded to the incident rushed him to Mama Lucy Hospital, where he received first aid before being referred to Nairobi West Hospital for specialised treatment.

Police said the officer was admitted in stable condition.

Investigations have been launched to identify and arrest the three suspects, who escaped after the attack.

Meanwhile, an 80-year-old man collapsed and died while walking in Gakindu Township, Mukurweini Sub-County, Nyeri County.

The deceased was identified as Johnstone Maina Gichuhi.

According to police, the incident was reported on Sunday night after members of the public discovered the elderly man’s body lying by the roadside.

Police officers who visited the scene established that Gichuhi had been seen walking in the town at around 8.30 p.m. before he suddenly collapsed and fell backwards. He died at the scene.

Investigators said the body had no visible external injuries, suggesting there was no immediate indication of foul play.

The scene was documented before the body was moved to Mukurweini Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
