Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have recovered police uniforms and copper wire in a coordinated operation in Isinya, Kajiado County.
The officers raided the suspects’ hideout in Majengo, where they were allegedly burning copper wire to strip off its insulation, but they escaped before the officers closed in.
Following a search in one of the houses associated with the suspects, police recovered Administration Police uniforms, including a beret, shirt, jungle jacket, trousers and a maroon belt, among other items like pliers, tin snips, solar equipment and copper wire.
Detectives from Isinya took charge of the investigations and are pursuing leads to apprehend those involved, recover additional stolen property and establish the full extent of the alleged criminal enterprise.
The team want to establish if there were other accomplices in the issue.
And police are investigating how three Eritrean asylum seekers escaped from the custody of the Department of Refugee Services (DRS) in Hagadera, Garissa County, while awaiting processing of their refugee status.
According to the police, the three asylum seekers had been placed under the custody of the department by a court in Bungoma pending processing and determination of their refugee status.
The latest escapees bring to 31 the number of asylum seekers who have reportedly fled from the facility, following an earlier escape by 28 others reported on September 10.
The report indicates that of the 42 asylum seekers committed to the custody of the DRS by the Bungoma court, only eight remain.
The asylum seekers reportedly leave the facility under the pretext of going out to collect valuables but fail to return.
Police noted that their movements cannot be fully restricted because they are not detainees or held in a state of confinement.
The circumstances surrounding the escapes remain under review by the relevant authorities.
