Raila Odinga Jr Announces Groundbreaking of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Monument


Raila Odinga Jr has announced the groundbreaking of a monument dedicated to Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, saying the project will preserve the late statesman’s legacy for generations to come.

The son of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga shared the milestone on Instagram, posting photos from the event where family members, leaders and supporters gathered to witness the beginning of the historic project.

In his caption, Raila Jr described the monument as a lasting tribute to the man many Kenyans fondly refer to as “Baba.”

“Today we broke ground on a place that will keep Baba’s story for generations who never had the chance to meet him. Grateful to everyone who stood with us on this ground.”

He accompanied the post with the hashtags #ALivingMonument and #KangoKaJaramogi, signalling that the project aims to celebrate and preserve Jaramogi’s life and contributions to Kenya’s political history.

The groundbreaking ceremony is part of efforts to transform Kango Ka Jaramogi into a heritage site where Kenyans, scholars and visitors can learn about the late nationalist’s journey and his role in the country’s struggle for independence and democratic reforms.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga remains one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

He served as the country’s first Vice President after independence in 1963 before resigning in 1966 following ideological differences with founding President Jomo Kenyatta.

He later became a leading voice for multiparty democracy, a legacy that continues to shape Kenya’s political landscape.
