Rigathi Gachagua attracts criticism with his outfit during Ukambani region political rally

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again found himself trending, this time not for his political remarks, but for his fashion choices.

On Monday, March 30, Gachagua led a host of leaders from his DCP party alongside members of the United Opposition in a series of political rallies across the Ukambani region.

The tour, which covered parts of Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui counties, saw the former DP engage residents on key issues including the high cost of living, governance, and the shifting political landscape.

While his message appeared to resonate with sections of the crowd, it was his outfit that quickly became the main talking point online.

Gachagua showed up dressed casually, seemingly abandoning his recently polished fashion sense.

He rocked a striped green and black rugby long-sleeve T-shirt paired with beige trousers, a look that immediately caught the attention of Kenyans after photos from the rally made their way onto social media.

What followed was a wave of reactions, with countless netizens poking fun at his outfit and accusing him of reverting to his “old-fashioned” dressing style.

Some of the mean and sarcastic comments included:

“Huyu amerudisha ile era ya curtain materials sasa… who is advising him surely?”

“From stylish back to ‘chief of outdated fashion’ in one rally… Gachagua never disappoints.”

“Those designers he hired must have gone on leave. This is a fashion emergency!”

“Why does he always look like he dressed in a hurry in the dark?”

“Ukambani people deserved better than this outfit bana… ata MC alikuwa amependeza kuliko yeye.”

Others went as far as questioning his styling team, insisting that those responsible for his recent fashion transformation needed to step up and maintain consistency.

“Please, whoever was dressing him the last few weeks should come back. This is sabotage!”

“Branding ni muhimu kwa siasa… this look is not giving leadership at all.”

Despite the online ridicule, Gachagua remained focused during the rallies, addressing residents and pushing his political agenda without any visible distraction.

His speeches emphasised unity within the opposition and the need to prioritize wananchi concerns amid ongoing economic challenges.

This is not the first time the former Deputy President’s wardrobe has sparked debate.

Over time, he has become an unlikely subject of fashion critique in Kenya’s digital space, with his style evolution being closely monitored by both supporters and critics alike.

In today’s social media-driven political environment, even the smallest details, like what a leader wears, can quickly overshadow the message they intend to deliver.

And as the Ukambani rally proved, when it comes to Rigathi Gachagua, Kenyans online are always watching… and never short of opinions.
