Russian security services have detained a 24-year-old man they say carried out a car bombing targeting a military serviceman and acted on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence, the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported.
The FSB said the suspect, a Russian citizen born in 2001, built and detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) that damaged the vehicle of a Defence Ministry soldier in Naro-Fominsk, southwest of Moscow.
According to the agency, the soldier was not in the vehicle at the time; he is currently deployed to what Russia calls the “special military operation” zone in Ukraine.
Investigators allege the suspect had previously set fire to another car bearing pro-military symbols and gathered information about a defence enterprise in Russia’s Altai Territory.
The FSB says he communicated with handlers via the Telegram messaging app and acted on their instructions.
Footage released by the FSB shows agents detaining the man, who reportedly confessed to receiving 160,000 rubles (about $1,900) for the bombing.
Authorities also say they discovered a second explosive device in Moscow and seized homemade explosives, bomb‑making materials and digital communications from the suspect’s residence.
A criminal case has been opened under Article 205 of Russia’s Criminal Code (terrorist act).
Russian investigators say they are also pursuing additional charges, including high treason and illegal weapons manufacturing.
The suspect has been remanded in custody; if convicted on all counts, he could face life imprisonment.
“The FSB of Russia once again draws attention to the fact that all persons who agreed to assist the enemy will be identified, prosecuted and will suffer a well-deserved severe punishment,” the agency said in a statement.
