Police arrested a Russian national after claims he had used a fake identity card to book a room at a hotel in Diani, Kwale County.
The motive of the incident was not immediately known.
Snezhko Fedo had on September 21, 2025 arrived at the Millennium Hotel in the area and used an identity card belonging to a Tanzanian to book the room.
The hotel management realized the false identity and alerted the police who arrived and detained him for further grilling.
Police said they are investigating the motive and will take further action on the man. This came as authorities heightened operations in the area and other parts of the country during the twelfth anniversary of the Westgate Mall attack.
On September 21, 2013, four masked men attacked the shopping mall in a siege that left at least 70 people dead.
More than 200 other people were injured in the siege that changed the security landscape of the country.
On Sunday, there were low key activities that were held to mark the day amid the operations against any threats.
Kenyan officials say they have made significant progress in its response against terrorism and violent extremism due to concerted efforts by various stakeholders.
According to the Global Terrorism Index 2025, the decreased terror activities within Kenya can be attributed to enhanced counter terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, inter-agency collaboration and community engagement within the last year.
The report further says the number of deaths attributed to terrorism especially from the Al-Shabaab- which is predominantly the most active terror group in Kenya and Somalia – dropped from 512 in 2023 to 387 in 2024, a decline of almost 25 per cent.
Of the 387 deaths attributed to the group, 91 per cent occurred in Somalia and the remaining nine per cent occurred in Kenya, Al-Shabaab was responsible for 33 deaths in Kenya in 2024, a 57 per cent decrease compared to the year prior.
