A Kenyan court has released two Somali teens who had been arrested and charged for stepping on the Kenyan flag during a football match at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The two teens aged 14 and 17 were released on a cash bail of Sh 50,000 each, Nairobi News has learnt.

As earlier reported by a cross section of the Kenyan media, the two Somali teens were captured in a viral video desecrating the flag during the CAF Champions League match between Somalia’s Mogadishu FC and Kenya Police FC on Saturday, September 20, 2025.

Reports indicate that the two minors were arrested on September 25, 2025, and faced multiple charges, including being in the country illegally, damaging a national symbol, and causing public disturbance.

Despite being arraigned following the charges, the two did not take a plea.

Magistrate Rose Gitau, who heard the case on September 26, 2025, ruled that only the minors’ biological parents could assume custody, rejecting a petition from other relatives.

Case To Answer

The Magistrate also ordered that their passports remain under the custody of the court administrator pending further inquiry.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two Somali minors went against the Kenyan laws, citing Section 2B of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, which criminalises any type of dishonour towards national symbols, including the flag and the anthem.

Nairobi News understands the case will be heard again on October 8, 2025.
