A suspect was attacked and killed after he and two accomplices used a spray to attack and rob a woman of cash and valuables in Nyali, Mombasa County.
A 74-year-old woman said she had parked her car and was crossing on foot near a petrol station on Friday when a gang which was riding on a motorcycle pulled there.
One of the suspects sprayed a chemical on the face of the woman flooring her. It was then that they grabbed her bag with cash and other valuables and tried to escape as she screamed for help.
A mob responded and attacked the three suspects killing one while two were arrested. Their motorcycle was vandalized and later picked up by police to the local station.
A chemical that was in a bottle that they used in the attack was recovered and sent to the government chemists for analysis, police said. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Such incidents have been on the rise in the area amid operations to address the trend.
In Kiembeni, Mombasa, a suspect was arrested while in possession of a pistol magazine with 16 bullets.
The suspect was also found with a dummy pistol, a whip and a sword. This was after he had threatened a woman that he would shoot her.
The woman had reported the matter to the police who acted on the same.
The suspect is under probe to establish if he has been involved in any form of crimes in the area, police said.
Elsewhere in Hodado, Wajir County, a headteacher of a school was injured in an attack by locals who were opposed to his posting to Garweine Primary School.
He said he was attacked by people known to him. Some locals supporting the teacher attacked the assailants prompting tension in the area. Police were informed and moved to calm the situation.
The victims were taken to hospital with multiple injuries, police said.
