Kenyan broadcaster Alex Mwakideu has received a fresh show of support after a Tanzanian ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist offered to examine him and explore possible treatment options for his hearing difficulties.
The development comes days after the veteran radio personality publicly opened up about his struggle with hearing loss, prompting an outpouring of concern from fans, colleagues and members of the public.
The Tanzanian specialist, known as Doctor G, reached out through fellow broadcaster Emmanuel Mwashumbe after learning about Mwakideu’s situation.
The doctor reportedly expressed willingness to meet the Kenyan broadcaster, conduct further assessments and offer professional advice.
Doctor G has academic qualifications in his field and has worked at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
He also indicated that he has a colleague in India with expertise that could potentially be relevant to the hearing difficulties affecting Mwakideu’s left ear.
The offer does not, however, amount to a confirmed treatment or cure.
Mwakideu would first need to undergo an appropriate medical assessment before specialists can determine whether any additional intervention could help.
Mwakideu’s emotional revelation
The specialist’s offer follows Mwakideu’s decision to speak candidly about a health challenge that has affected both his professional and personal life.
The broadcaster recently revealed that he had lost a significant portion of his hearing in his left ear.
Reports citing his account say tests showed mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss, with approximately 45 to 50 per cent hearing loss in the affected ear.
Mwakideu explained that he initially thought the problem could have been caused by something as simple as blocked earwax.
Further medical examinations, however, revealed that the problem was more serious.
His disclosure attracted particular attention because of the unusual contrast between his career and his condition.
For more than two decades, Mwakideu has worked in broadcasting, where the ability to listen, communicate and process sound is central to the job.
His career has included stints at Baraka FM, Radio Maisha, Milele FM and Radio 47.
Hearing aids became part of his daily life
Mwakideu has also explained that hearing aids have helped him continue with his professional responsibilities and maintain normal interactions with his family.
Alex Mwakideu previously revealed that he underwent medical assessment after consulting an ENT specialist and was subsequently advised to use hearing aids.
He said the devices cost about Sh430,000 and were custom-made to correspond with his hearing needs.
The broadcaster said the devices have made a noticeable difference, allowing him to participate in meetings without constantly struggling to follow conversations.
He has also described the improvement in his family life, particularly his ability to communicate and interact with his children without worrying about whether he has heard them properly.

Mwakideu’s revelation has generated considerable public interest partly because hearing difficulties are not always immediately visible.

Rather than immediately promising a particular procedure, the Tanzanian specialist has offered to examine the broadcaster and determine what options may be available.
His mention of an India-based colleague also suggests that, depending on the medical findings, Mwakideu could potentially be connected with additional specialist expertise.
For now, the focus remains on proper assessment and professional medical guidance.
The development has nevertheless provided encouragement to Mwakideu at a time when he has been unusually open about a personal challenge.
His story is also a reminder that hearing difficulties can affect people from every profession, including those whose careers are built around sound and that seeking appropriate medical attention can help people find practical ways to continue living and working normally.
