Mexican authorities have launched an investigation after TikToker César Gastélum was shot and killed while livestreaming from the city of Culiacán, an attack that has renewed concerns over escalating violence in the northwestern state of Sinaloa and the risks faced by online personalities operating in regions affected by organized crime.
Gastélum, who had built a large following on TikTok through comedy videos and light-hearted content, was broadcasting live with friends outside a fast-food restaurant when two men riding a motorcycle approached the group.
According to authorities and video footage reviewed by multiple news organizations, one of the attackers opened fire before fleeing the scene. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward, but Gastélum died from his injuries.
Officials in Sinaloa confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway.
Security personnel collected evidence at the scene while investigators began reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts in an effort to identify those responsible. No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing, saying authorities must determine both the motive behind the attack and those responsible for planning and carrying it out.
