Traffic Snarled On Thika Superhighway After Super Metro Bus Set Ablaze

Traffic was temporarily disrupted along Thika Superhighway on Monday afternoon, September 1, after a bus belonging to the Super Metro Sacco was set on fire following a fatal accident.

Eyewitness footage showed the bus fully engulfed in flames as a crowd gathered at the scene.

According to preliminary reports, the chaos began after the bus allegedly struck and killed a boda boda rider near the Burudani area.

In response, enraged boda boda operators reportedly attacked the vehicle, ultimately setting it ablaze.

Though the bus was destroyed beyond repair, no additional injuries were reported during the incident.

It remains unclear whether there were any passengers on board at the time.

Shortly before the fire, social media users claiming to be at the scene issued warnings and calls for help, reporting that the bus was under threat from an angry mob.

The accident is believed to have occurred at an exit off the main highway, as video evidence suggests the motorcycle involved was not on the main thoroughfare.

The incident caused a significant traffic snarl-up stretching from Burudani towards Juja Town.

This marks the second such case in under a month where boda boda operators have taken violent action following the death of a colleague.

On August 7, a similar incident saw a City Shuttle bus torched along Jogoo Road.

Witnesses said the boda boda rider involved in Monday’s crash sustained fatal injuries on impact.

Passengers aboard the bus were forced to disembark and seek alternative transport as the driver and conductor awaited police intervention.

However, tensions escalated before authorities arrived, with more riders arriving and setting the bus on fire.

This is also the second recent fire involving a Super Metro vehicle.

On August 6, another bus from the Sacco caught fire on Naivasha Road, though the circumstances in that case remain unclear.
