Tragedy struck a school in Kogelo, Siaya County when a 14-year-old boy drowned in River Yala.
The Grade Seven pupil at Uloma Primary School had on Wednesday May 13 with others been sent to the river to fetch water for use at the institution.
The pupils decided to swim before they could return to school.
It was then that the victim was swept by the water and drowned.
His colleagues raised an alarm in vain. A search for the body continued on Thursday. Only his clothes were recovered from the river bank.
The incident sent the school fraternity to mourning. Locals joined the search team with hopes of recovering the body.
This was among three drowning incidents reported on Wednesday, police said.
Elsewhere in Lari, Kiambu County, the body of a man who had been reported missing was recovered from Thiririka River. Police said John Kamau Wabara, 39 was reported missing on May 4.
The body was decomposed when it was recovered on May 13 evening and moved to the local mortuary for other procedures.
Meanwhile, in Amukura area, Busia County, a body of a man was found on River Walachi after a suspected drowning incident, on Wednesday.
The body was naked and trapped on the river bank when it was found, police said. The body had no visible injuries when it was found. It was later moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.
Other tragic incidents
In other news, 13 people were killed on Wednesday night in separate road accidents in the country, police said.
According to the police, among those killed were 10 pedestrians, a passenger, a rider and a driver.
The accidents also left 13 other people who included six passengers, four riders and three pillion passengers with serious injuries.
Fatal road accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address the menace. Most of the incidents are linked to speeding and reckless driving.
