Tragedy as 3-year-old boy drowns in river Murubara, Kirinyaga County


A family in Kirinyaga County is mourning the death of a three-year-old boy who drowned in River Murubara in Mwea East Sub-County.

The incident was reported on March 23, 2026 after the child went missing earlier in the day at around 9:30 a.m.

He had been left under the care of his grandmother while his parents were away doing casual work.

A search was immediately launched, leading to the discovery of the child’s body in the river.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to exercise increased vigilance, especially during the ongoing rainy season, as swollen rivers continue to pose a significant danger to children and communities living nearby.

Elsewhere, tragedy struck a family in Kakamega County when a one-and-a-half-year-old girl was killed after being hit by two bulls fighting in Eshimuli Village, Eluche Sub-Location.

The toddler had no visible injuries, and her body was moved to St. Mary’s Mission Hospital Mortuary for preservation, pending an autopsy.

And a 52-year-old man has died after being struck by lightning during heavy rains in Makueni County.

The incident occurred on March 23, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Kathatu Village, Kilili Location, Nzauri Sub-County.

Authorities reported that the deceased, identified as Abednego Dunda Mainga, was diverting runoff water to his pond when lightning struck him, causing instant death.

Such incidents have been on the rise amid calls for caution on locals to exercise caution and avoid sheltering under trees.
