A three-year-old boy has died after a wooden house in which he and his twin brother had been left was reduced to ashes in a fire in Gatundu North, Kiambu County.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 4pm at Kiawagware Village, where the four-roomed wooden structure served as servant quarters for workers at a tea farm.
The twins had reportedly been left in the house by their mother, who had gone to work as a casual labourer at the tea farm.
According to police, tea pickers working nearby were alerted by a loud scream from a neighbour who had gone to fetch drinking water and noticed thick smoke billowing from the house.
Neighbours rushed to the scene and managed to rescue one of the twins alive. However, the other boy was found severely burnt and was pronounced dead.
Police officers visited the scene and processed it as investigations into the incident began.
The child’s body was moved to General Kago Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.
Property destroyed in the fire was estimated at Sh600,000.
Police said the cause of the fire had not been established and investigations were ongoing.
And a 76-year-old man has died after he was allegedly attacked with a machete by his 27-year-old son at their home in Ugunja, Siaya County.
Joseph Owino Omollo was attacked at his home in Asere Village, Umala Sub-Location, on Tuesday afternoon, according to a police report.
Police said Omollo was seated on the veranda of his house at about 2.30pm when his son, walked into the house.
The attacker, who police said is believed to have a mental health condition, allegedly emerged from the house carrying a machete and used it to slash his father on the head, inflicting a deep cut wound.
Omollo was rushed to Matibabu Hospital in Ukwala but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers from Ugunja visited and processed the scene, while the suspected murder weapon was recovered.
Omondi was arrested and is being held as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing continue.
The deceased’s body was preserved at the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
