Two arrested as detectives bust suspected narcotics network in Ruaka

Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), working in collaboration with officers from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), have arrested two suspects following an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected narcotics trafficking network.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation was launched after detectives received credible intelligence that a group of suspects was planning a narcotics exchange in Syokimau, Machakos County.

“Acting on credible intelligence that suspects were planning a narcotics exchange in Syokimau, the team responded swiftly. However, upon arrival it was established that the planned meeting had been aborted,” detectives said.

Based on real-time information from covert sources, the operation was redirected to Ruaka in Kiambu County, where investigators carried out a search at a house within Mbuti Apartment.

During the operation, officers recovered several items believed to be linked to narcotics trafficking, including pellets and packages of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, digital weighing scales, mobile phones, foreign passports and cash in both Kenyan and Nigerian currencies.

Police arrested two suspects during the raid, identified as Okeke Ikechukwu, a Nigerian national, and Alex Opondo, a Kenyan national.

“The suspects were escorted to Ruaraka Police Station and Pangani Police Station for processing, while all recovered exhibits have been secured for forensic analysis,” the DCI said.

Authorities said the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue to trace additional suspects and dismantle the wider narcotics trafficking network.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and transnational organised crime in the country,” detectives added.
